About Jim

        In addition to being the moderator for NY Mens Action Network Jim is an Administrator with the Friends of Protection for Men facebook site which is the largest father/men's advocy site on facebook. Jim Hays was a co-founder and past President of the Coalition of Fathers and Families NY, Inc. (FaFNY) where he currently serves as Treasurer of FaFNY's Executive Board.  He started his father and family advocacy in 1995 in response to a divorce and custody battle which, after 3 years of litigation, violation of basic civil rights and decency, arrest, and personal bankruptcy ended in him losing custody of his children, and all access to them. He has served with several (now defunct) father and family organizations as President and/or Board member prior to his forming FaFNY.  In his 19 years of advocacy, he has worked with or in concert with such notables and organizations in the mens, fathers and parental rights field as Richard Doyle of the Mens Defense Association and Men, Fathers, and Children International, David Levy and Sal Frasca and the Children’s Rights Council, Mike McCormick, Dr. Stephen Walker, and Dr. Stephen Baskerville  and the American Coalition of Fathers and Children, His Side with Glenn Sacks, and Dr. Ed Stevens and the On-Step Institute and many others. 

          Jim was Chair of the FaFNY Legislative Committee and for many years ran the Legislative Education and Awareness Day (LEAD) in Albany, working of passage of shared parenting and other legislation.  He has worked for FaFNY lobbying for family court reform and has met with legislators, the Governors Office, the Office of Court Administration and the Office of Child Support Enforcement at the state and local level.  He has had many Op Ed and opinion pieces published in newspapers and has appeared on radio and TV as an organization representative and advocate for shared parenting.  He was also co-founder and Treasurer of the NY Mens Action Network Political Action Committee, the first PAC ever formed in NY to work for parent and father rights.

          Jim is a career police officer having served over 30 years in that field.  He served as a Lieutenant with the NYS DEC Police in the Capital District and has served as an officer assigned to Long Island and also and Investigator on the Governors Long Island Solid Waste Task Force, and an officer in Rensselaer, Schenectady and Saratoga Counties,  He finished Academically second in his academy class and is a certified special topics police instructor in solid waste enforcement, domestic violence, emergency vehicle operation, all-terrain vehicle emergency operations and is a recognized authority on solid waste identification and enforcement.  Prior to that he served with the NYS University Police assigned to Oswego and Morrisville, NY and was also a Military Police Officer with the 2nd Armored Division, Ft. Hood, TX and was liaison to the Killeen, TX Police Department where he worked in that capacity for a year.

          Jim holds a Bachelors Degree from SUNY ESC in Family and Society, an interdisciplinary study of men in the family and in society.  He also holds an Associate Degree from SUNY in Environmental Conservation and Criminal Justice and an Associate Degree in Business Administration.  He has attended 3 police academies, NYS DEC DLE 8th Basic Academy, SUNY Public Safety Academy, and the Military Police School.
Jim is certified in Critical Incident Stress Management and is currently on the NYS DEC DLE CISM Team.  He has over 1000 hours in individual and group peer counseling for fathers suffering the effects of the family court system.   He has been President of the Officers Statewide PBA and has served in several regional union positions before that.  He has served at natural disasters throughout the state, the Avianca Plane Crash and Hurricane Bob on Long Island, the 9-1-1 response in New York City, and recently Tropical Storm Irene and Lee in the 9 counties around the Capital District among others.

          Jim is a life member of the NRA, Life member of the American Coalition of Fathers and Children, Life member of the NYS Conservation Council, a 25+ year member of the NY Conservation Officers Association, a member of the National Coalition of Free Men, a member of the Cato Institute, NYS Rifle and Pistol Association, the NY and Montgomery County Farm Bureaus, and the the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance.  

           Jim resides in Montgomery County overlooking the Schoharie Valley in NY with his dog Daisy
